FAQ

Is there a level breakdown like at Regionals?

No. There are no levels at Artist of the Year. Dancers are nominated based on their level at Regionals, but once they arrive at Nationals, everyone competes on the same playing field.

Do they get a medal or adjudication for their solo?

No. Artist of the Year dancers do not receive an adjudication or medal for their solo. Instead, their scores from class, improv, interview, and solo will all be added together to determine final results.

Where do classes and improv take place?

All master classes and improv sessions happen in the classroom.

  • Observers are welcome - just stay seated in the chairs or against the walls so the dancers can stay focused.

  • No videotaping is allowed in the classroom or during improv. That includes phones. Let's keep it fair.

What happens on stage?

The solo and the interview both happen on the main stage. Here's how it will go:

  • Each dancer will be introduced on stage.

  • They'll be asked a question by the judges and will answer it on the mic.

  • Right after their response, they'll take their starting position and go straight into their solo.

When are awards?

All awards will be announced during the Choreographer of the Year / Artist of the Year

We'll recognize the Top 10 in each age group for:

  • Master Classes

  • Improv

  • Interview Q&A

  • Solo Performance

Then we'll announce:

  • Artist of the Year Runners-Up

  • Artist of the Year Winners

What should dancers wear to the gala?

We encourage dancers to dress up for the gala. If you've got the time to glam, go for it. If not, no stress - we get it

.

Will dancers have numbers?

Yes. Each Artist of the Year dancer will receive one number at check-in. That number is used for the classroom, improv, and competition.

  • It's the same number the entire event.

  • Don't lose it - we don't have extras.

  • You do not need to wear it on stage during your solo. Costume only is fine.

How is the order decided? Can we skip around?

No skipping or jumping around in the order. Please make sure your dancer is:

  • In the classroom on time for all master classes and improv

  • At the main stage on time for their solo and interview

Timing is tight and we don't hold spots - so plan accordingly!

What happens during the Choreographer of the Year awards?

Artist of the Year dancers will sit in the audience during this part. When it's time for their awards, they'll be called on stage for their Top 10 recognitions and final announcements.

Have other questions? Let us know! We can't wait to celebrate these incredible dancers and everything they bring to the stage and classroom.
